A study in tongues.
Biography:
Reona Brass is an educator and member of Peepeekisis Cree Nation in Saskatchewan. Educated at the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College and at the Ontario College of Art, Brass has produced installation and performance works across Canada, the US and South America since 1993. Her work has been shown in numerous collaborations and group exhibitions including La caída: cuerpo poético/cuerpo politico, National Gallery of Bogota, Columbia (2004); Ka Kiskih: tamowiwin, AKA Gallery in Saskatoon (2005); and, the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics at NYU in NYC (2003) and Belo Horizonte, Brazil (2005).
Artist Statement:
It is a curious dilemma communicating as a native person today. I am simply invisible or considered extinct by most outside of my own small community. With the loss of many languages, however, I believe performance art remains the oldest language with which we can still communicate. I leave it to others to learn this language.
