‘WATER’
Performance Summary:
Down on all fours in the dark, with both hands cupped and reaching out and upwards to receive the many projected pinhole images. Repeated gestures; images are culled by pulling the cupped hands towards the face. This study of the various images is accompanied by varied utterances of “WATER,” until all the images are engaged.
Biography:
Based in Halifax, Michael Fernandes was born in Trinidad. An instructor at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University (NSCADU), Fernandes’ art practice includes mixed media, installation, performance, as well as audio and book works. His work has been exhibited extensively, notably at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (Halifax), Articule (Montreal), Blackwood Gallery (Toronto), C.I.A.C. (Montreal), Dunlop Art Gallery (Regina), Mercer Union (Toronto), The National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), The Power Plant (Toronto), Saw Gallery (Ottawa), P.S: (New York), Art Public Calaf (Barcelona), and in The context fo Art Biennale (Warsaw).
Artist Statement:
Water is connected to emotions. We are closer to water than money, and yet money is often used to define who we are. The higher water flows, the colder the temperature. The colder, the cleaner the water flows.
Standing water is much warmer and more susceptible to contamination.
